Anne Diehl

Jan. 18, 1938 — March 24, 2012

Sonora resident Anne Diehl died March 24 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. She was 74.

Mrs. Diehl was born in Lakewood, Ohio, and married her husband Bill Diehl on March 24, 1942. Mr. Diehl, while serving in the U.S. Navy enjoyed the San Ramon Valley and the family moved to Walnut Creek, Alamo and Danville. She brought up their three children, losing her eldest daughter to cancer at age 27, while her husband worked as an architect in the 1950s and 1960s. She managed his business and worked for a number of years for Bernard of Vienna, a European antique dealer in Walnut Creek. 

In the early 1970s, the couple moved to Sonora. 

Mrs. Diehl is survived by her daughter, Debbie Colston, of Sonora; her son, B.J. Diehl, of Alamo; grandchildren Natalie McCarty and Jimmy Diehl; and numerous nieces and nephews, the majority of which live in Ohio.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. April 28 at the Sonora Hills clubhouse.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in her name can be made to a favorite charity.

Aileen Valverde Johnston

June 30, 1928 — April 19, 2012

Sonora resident Aileen Valverde Johnston died April 19 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. She was 83. 

Mrs. Johnston was born in Sonora, the daughter of Loretta and Herman Valverde. 

She enjoyed spending time with family and friends and singing in the United Methodist Church Choir, of which she was a part for 17 years. She was also a lay leader in the Methodist women’s group. She enjoyed traveling to Canada, Mexico, across the U.S. and the Panama Canal. 

She graduated from Sonora Elementary School and Sonora High School and moved to Oregon in 1979. She was a volunteer firefighter and organized fundraisers for the fire department. She also enjoyed to dance on Saturday nights at the Veterans Memorial Hall in Tuolumne. 

She is survived by her son, Jay Johnston, of Sebastopol; her daughter, Jan Johnston, of Vacaville; cousins Dolores Mitchell, Mark Mitchell, Marcia Whittle, Millie Krause, Donna Upwall Royce, Sonny Upwall, of Carson City, Nev., Geraldine Adams, Rob Adams and Rick Adams.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Jack Johnston; her parents, Loretta and Herman Valverde; and her grandparents, Ben and Lillie Valverde, of Sonora.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sonora United Methodist Church. 

In lieu of flowers, a donation in her name can be made to Sonora United Methodist Church women’s group.

Dorothy ‘Ruth’ (Stoumbaugh) Westfall

Feb. 14, 1935 — April 18, 2012

Tuolumne resident Dorothy “Ruth” (Stoumbaugh) Westfall died April 18 at Avalon Care Center. She was 77.

Mrs. Westfall was born in Modesto and grew up in Tuolumne. She also lived in Fairfield and moved back to Tuolumne in 1999. She worked as a medical records coder for 30 years. She lived at Avalon for six months. She was active at her church and the Tuesday Club meetings. Mrs. Westfall also enjoyed crafts and being an artist. 

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Janie Hamilton, in 1991; her grandson, Freddie Hamilton, in 1991; her son, Richard S. Mullins, in 2009; and her husband, Robert Westfall, in 2001.

She is survived by daughters Sandra Davis, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and Pam Anderson, of Tuolumne; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in her name can be made to Hospice of the Sierra. 

A celebration of life will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Tuolumne Veterans Memorial Hall in Tuolumne.
