The Bret Harte Bullfrogs were officially in second place for one week.
And to them, the four-time defending Mother Lode League champions, that was long enough.
Behind Bullfrog Alex Milwards’ 34, Bret Harte pulled off a 220-227 road win over Summerville on Thursday at Mountain Springs Golf Course and jumped back into first place.
“Well,” said Milward, “this was a really big win to us. We’re so close with Summerville for the league championship race right now. This win will give us a big confidence boost. We were happy.”
Bret Harte upped its MLL dual-meet record to 9-0 and Summerville fell to 5-2.
With the mid-season MLL Tournament points figured in — a meet won by Summerville — Bret Harte is in first place with 34 overall points and the Bears are second with 30.
“Our kids were excited today,” said Bret Harte head coach Rich Cathcart. “They knew this was big. They also know that there’s more pressure on everybody else than us.”
“It was a tough and cold day at Mountain Springs today,” said Bears head coach Darcy Wingo. “This was a close match for all — except Alex Milward!”
Other scorers for Bret Harte were Jayden Saville 44, Rodney Riner 45, Scott Hatfield 48 and Patrick Groat 49.
Scoring for Summerville were Spencer Morse 43, JB Mitchell 44, Kyle McLaurin 44, Charlie McClung 47 and Jordan Fish 49.
“Summerville has a good team and we were fortunate to catch them on an off-day,” said Cathcart.
“Coach Cathcart is a very low-key guy,” said Milward. “But he’s always very encouraging and we could tell that he was very happy for us today.”
As for his 2-under par score, Milward said, “Because it was pretty windy, I just kept concentrating on hitting that ball straight and not allowing myself to get into too much trouble.”
Bret Harte, incredibly so, has not lost a league dual-match in four-and-a-half years.
“The streak is still alive,” said Milward. “And we hope to keep it that way but we know that will be tough. But we got a lot of confidence out of this match today.”
