The longest tenured member of the Sonora City Council, and one of the longest serving elected officials in the state, is seeking another term. Ron Stearn said on Monday that he plans to run for City Council again in the June election. He has taken out his nomination papers, and he said he only needs to get “three or four more” signatures before he officially files to get on the ballot.
Stearn, 83, had previously not decided whether or not he would seek another term. He was first elected to the City Council in 1964, and has served as mayor four times. “It hasn’t become a way of life, but it kind of has,” Stearn said of serving on the council. City Council candidates have until March 9 to file their election paperwork with 20 valid signatures to get on the June 5 ballot. Stearn’s seat is one of three up for election this year. Councilman David Sheppard and Mayor Bill Canning have also said they plan to run for re-election. Connie Williams, a Sonora resident who has sat on the Tuolumne County Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors Planning Committee, announced last week that she is running for the City Council as well. The filing period for City Council started on Feb. 13. If at least one of the three incumbents does not run, the March 9 filing deadline is extended to March 14. Sonora City Council is one of a handful of local offices that will be on the June primary ballot. Others include two county Superior Court judge positions and three seats on the Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors. |
