The Sonora Wildcat girls’ basketball team took home third place on Saturday in the Lodi Tournament.
After their opening-round win on Thursday, the Wildcats lost to tournament champion Beyer 56-50 on Friday and defeated Gregori 41-30 in the third-place game on Saturday.
For the second week in-a-row, Wildcat guard Elise Amend earned All-Tournament honors.
Against Beyer, the game was close throughout. Beyer led 12-11 after the first quarter, 23-20 at halftime and 34-31 after three quarters.
“They were a good team with a lot of athleticism,” said Wildcat head coach Amy Santos. “Plain and simple, we got out rebounded. But, this is the kind of game I want for preseason. It helps prepare us for league and really it could’ve gone either way.  Hopefully we’re able to learn from it and move on without making the same mistakes.”
The Wildcats had six different players hit 3-pointers including Tyler Swycinsky, Bailey Henington, Maddie Pallante, Taylor Howell, Sammi Knowles and Jessie Fong.
For the game, Swycinski scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds, Cassidy Knowles and Howell each had six points and Pallante and Henington each scored five points.
In the third-place game on Saturday, Sonora played suffocating defense and jumped out to a 29-16 lead after three quarters.
“We boxed out better in this game,” said Santos. “They had three girls over six feet tall and we did a great job defending them and keeping them off the boards.”
For Sonora (5-2), Pallante tallied nine points, Swycinsky six and Amend scored five points and also dished seven assists and made three steals.
The Wildcats next will face crosstown-rival Summerville on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Tuolumne.
