49er cars back in business in Angels Camp

Cars are selling in Angels Camp under the 49er moniker after a three-year hiatus.
49er Motors hosted its grand opening Saturday, with owner Greg Scott leasing the lot on South Main Street from Richard Wilmshurst and Alan Corell, who operated 49er Subaru at that location for many years.
The original 49er closed in 2008 with E.K. Fuddster used car sales renting the property late that year, but closing the doors in 2009. Scott is grateful to Wilmshurst and Corell for allowing him the use of the familiar name.
“We’d like to continue the same tradition that was here,” Scott said.
As Calaveras County Chamber of Commerce President Jacob Lewis, on hand for a ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday, noted before a gathering of several dozen, cars have been sold at the lot for 75 years and for the last 55, Wilmshurst and Corell have been Chamber members.
Each man was presented a plaque noting their lengthy tenure.
“We’re here to celebrate Calaveras’ newest and oldest business,” Lewis said.
Scott, an Angels Camp resident, said he has sold cars off and on for 20 years. He also owns Scott’s Yogurt Factory, which opened in January 2010 on the north end of the city and added a Valley Springs location earlier this year. His family owned Scott’s Tavern downtown for a quarter-century before it became Claussen’s Corner.
The business had a soft opening Oct. 1 and, since that date, Scott said, several people have come by each day to thank him for reopening the lot and saving them more than an hour’s drive to buy a vehicle.
Scott and local business and political leaders hope the lot will provide an economic lift as well.
“We wanted to have a place for some people to work,” he said.
“I want to wish Greg great success in his new business venture,” Angels Camp Mayor Elaine Morris said.
