Jobless rate falls in Tuolumne County, flat in Calaveras

    Jobless claims in Tuolumne County fell in August according to a report from the Economic Development Department.
    The county’s unemployment rate was 12.7 percent last month, down from 13.5 percent in July and 13.3 percent last year.
    Jobs were added in the leisure and hospitality fields, and private service producing. About 80 state and local government jobs were added last month, however government employment in the county was down by more than 3 percent overall, compared with the same period last year.
    The labor force in Tuolumne County has fallen 1.4 percent from 26,060 in August, 2010, to 25,690 last month.
    Unemployment in Calaveras County last month remained flat at 15.1 percent compared with August 2010, but joblessness fell from 15.6 percent in July.
    Calaveras County saw job declines in the service industry, state and local government, while hospitality and leisure rose slightly.
    The labor force in Calaveras County fell to 19,420 last month from a high of 20,220 in August 2010.
    The statewide unemployment rate rose slightly from 12 percent in July to 12.1 percent in August. The national unemployment rate held steady at 9.1 percent last month, down from 9.6 percent during the same period last year, according to EDD.
