Supervisor Spellman To the Editor: Pericles of Athens was said to skip many of his assigned meetings so that he would be taken more seriously when he did show up. Supervisor Spellman has taken the Periclean gambit to its extreme, showing up for one vote in the last five minutes of a two hour meeting after missing entirely the first four meetings of the Central Sierra Planning Council, to which he was appointed in January by the Calaveras Board of Supervisors. He accused Supervisor Callaway of “tattling” when she noted his absences. But it can’t be tattling if it’s a matter of public record in which the constituents are likely to be interested. No, I think Merita was paying tribute to the awesome power of a politician who knows he can achieve more and please more people by his absence than by his attendance, and who accomplishes more with a single vote than a roomful of conscientious drudges can in months of meetings. We can only pray that no one is injured when he exercises the awesome power of that lone vote. Can’t wait to get my fig leaf in the mail. Eric Jung Bear Valley Local theaters To the Editor: We need to support the fabulous live theaters we are lucky to have here in the Mother Lode to sustain their existence. Stage 3 is now showing “August: Osage County,” and it has a brilliant cast about passionate family relationships, peppered with great comedic relief (for mature audiences). Sierra Rep’s Fallon Theater production of the favorite “Annie” is wonderful for the whole family. Sierra Rep’s East Sonora stage has “Ladies Man,” and it will keep you laughing from the very beginning to the final curtain. Absolutely something for everyone! So what is there not to love about letting your imagination go, lifting your spirits and taking in a live production at one of these exceptional theaters. Get your tickets now to enjoy live theater at Sierra Repertory’s Fallon House and East Sonora Stages, as well as Stage 3. Then just sit back enjoy the creative artistry and most of all support our excellent live local theaters today. Elizabeth Jones Columbia Broadway in the Sierras To the Editor: Well they have done it again with “Annie.” Get your grand kids, kids and neighbors to SRT, you’ll love it. SRT is having the same problem that all of the local businesses are, loss of revenue. If you can’t get to the performance then donate any amount that you want to so that they can continue to offer professional stage to our community. Donations are tax deductable. If you want a few tears, music and laughs then you gotta go. Gary van Den Bergh Jamestown |
