Foresta fire grows, burns home

Highway 120 into Yosemite National Park remained closed this morning as firefighters attempted to control a 2,600-acre fire near El Portal that has burned at least one structure and filled the skies over parts of Tuolumne and Calaveras counties with smoke.

Fire closes road from Highway 120 to Yosemite Valley

According to Yosemite National Park, the Big Oak Flat Road remains closed today between Crane Flat and the El Portal Road while firefighters dealt with a 2,100-acre blaze near El Portal. Residents in the small communities of Old El Portal and Foresta, as well as campers in Crane Flat, Bridalveil Creek and Yosemite Creek, have been evacuated.

The fire was only 5 percent contained as of this morning, and multiple hot shot crews, aircraft, wildland engines and other heavy machinery remained assigned to the fire.

According to Yosemite National Park, the fire started at 3:15 p.m. Saturday. Further information on the cause was not available today.

The Big Oak Flat Road is the only connecting road between Highway 120 and the Yosemite Valley. While the road remains closed, park visitors can take the Highway 120 entrance to visit Tioga Pass and Tuolumne Meadows but must use the Highway 140 or 41 entrances to access the popular valley.

Groveland crash

One person was killed and another injured in a head-on collision this morning near Groveland, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported at about 10:50 a.m. on Highway 120 near the Groveland Ranger Station.

Traffic was backed up both ways for about a 1/2 mile in both directions.

Hotter temps, lightning forecast

Triple-digit temperatures will park over the Tuolumne and Calaveras county foothills this weekend, while warm moist air in the high country could bring balmy conditions and more lightning, according to the National Weather Service.

The latest forecast from the National Weather Service calls for mostly sunny skies and temperatures ranging from 97 to 101 in the lower-elevation communities like Sonora, Angels Camp and Copperopolis today, with those same locations expected to see highs between 99 and 103 Saturday and between 96 and 99 Sunday.
