Penny Lee (Cabral) Foster
Feb 17, 1950 — July 12, 2009 Mrs. Foster was born in San Francisco, and lived in Watsonville for 25 years. While there, she worked her way up to bank manager. She lived in Groveland for four years. Her hobbies included collecting rubber stamps and volunteering for the March of Dimes. Mrs. Foster is survived by her husband of 40 years, Stephen Foster, of Groveland; her daughter, Dianna Foster, of Los Banos; her son, Kenneth Foster, of Freedom, Santa Cruz County; grandchildren, Kendra, Cody, and Dyllan; sisters, Georgianna Maldonado, of Shingletown, Shasta County, and Barbara Berry, of Fort Jones, Siskiyou County; and a brother, Albert Cabral, of Ceres. Inurnment will be in El Carmelo Cemetery in Pacific Grove. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 25, at the Elks Lodge, 121 Martineli St., Watsonville.

June 27, 1968 — July 15, 2009 She was born in San Jose, attended Tenaya Elementary School in Groveland, and was a 1986 graduate of Sonora High School and the Regional Occupational Program nursing program. She was a firefighter for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection during the Stanislaus Complex Fire in 1987 and was an emergency medical technician for Groveland Ambulance Service. In 1995, she graduated from Sierra College Nursing Program and began work as a rescue nurse for California Shock Trauma Air Rescue, a helicopter service in Auburn. In the late 1990s, she became a trauma nurse in the emergency room for Sutter-Roseville Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her mother, Susan Gamer-Steinmetz, in 2000. She is survived by her husband, Mark Hargon, of El Dorado Hills; children, Trent Archer, Brenna Hargon and Brielle Hargon, all of El Dorado County; her father, Pete Steinmetz, of Groveland; brothers, Nathan Gamer-Steinmetz, of Mamou, La., and Jon Steinmetz, of Clovis; and a sister, Lisa Perich, of San Diego. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may made to Sonora High School’s Regional Occupational Program.
Services are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Friday at Green Valley Mortuary in Cameron Park. Green Valley Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Nov. 21, 1916 — July 15, 2009 Mrs. O’Geen was born in Fresno. She lived in Murphys and Vallecito the past 34 years. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony O’Geen, in 2006. She is survived by three children, Russell O’Geen, of Madera, Anthony O’Geen, of Vallecito, and Joseph O’Geen, of Vallecito; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A private family service will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be private. Angels Memorial Chapel handled arrangements.
June 24, 1935 — July 20, 2009 Born in Oakland, Mr. Ornellas lived in Arnold for 13 years. He owned a State Farm Insurance office for 30 years and was a professional baseball pitcher in the minor leagues of the Cardinals and Yankees in the 1950s. Mr. Ornellas is survived by his wife, Marilyn Ornellas, of Arnold; sons, Rory Ornellas, of Valley Springs, and Chris Ornellas, of Sausalito; a daughter, Lesa Osterholm, of Grass Valley; a brother, Larry Ornellas, of Sonora; and four grandchildren, Linsey and Whitney Ornellas, of Valley Springs, and Alex and Marcos Ornellas of Sausalito. His wife said a “Celebration of Norm” will be held at noon Aug. 1 at Snowflake Lodge, Blue Lake Springs, in Arnold Angels Memorial Chapel handled arrangements.
July 20, 1942 — July 16, 2009 Mrs. Volk was born to Margaret (Parker) and Charles Ouilette Sr. in Yuba City and spent most of her youth in Redding, attending local schools, including Shasta Union High School. She moved with her then-husband, Roy Thompson, to Tuolumne County in 1966 and lived in various communities in the area, including Standard. She worked for many years as a bookkeeper for Tom Howard Logging in Soulsbyville, then for The Union Democrat as a page designer for 10 years. She later worked as a bookkeeper for the MACT Health Board in Tuolumne. Mrs. Volk moved to Redding in 1999 and married John Volk the following year. She worked for the Redding Rancheria as public relations director and community liaison. During this time, she helped coordinate the return of the remains of Ishi, the last of the Yahi people, a sub-tribe of the Yana, which once populated a pocket of central California. She later returned to the field of bookkeeping with an in-house transfer to the finance department on the rancheria, where she handled payroll until her retirement in 2004. In the 1970s and ‘80s, Mrs. Volk volunteered as scorekeeper for many years for recreational women’s-league softball and as league secretary at Sonora Family Bowl. She was an avid gardener and had prolific flower and vegetable beds wherever she lived, her family said. She also enjoyed attending outdoor concerts with her husband and sharing her backyard and swimming pool with her grandchildren, who called her “Mammo.” She was a member of the Madesi band of Pit River Indians of Northern California and actively participated in tribal meetings and donated her time on the Pit River Housing Council. Mrs. Volk is survived by her husband, John Volk, of Redding; three children and their spouses, Ken and PKaye Thompson, of Spring Creek, Nev., Alicia Thompson Enzi, of Jamestown, and Margie Thompson Hiser and Sean Hiser, of Columbia; stepchildren, Joe Volk and Valerie Volk, both of Antioch; a brother and sister-in-law, Cyril and Mary Ouilette, of Carson City, Nev.; grandchildren, Mark Mills and Marty Mills, both of Sonora, Joe Enzi and Tom Enzi, both of Arnold, Sophia Kaufman, of Columbia, Sarah and Jake Ramirez-Volk, of Southern California, and Hunter Lew, of Antioch; her lifelong friend, Lynne Sunderland, of Anderson; and numerous extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Helen Chandler, of Tucson, Ariz., and brother Bud Ouilette, of Washoe Valley, Nev. A celebration of life will be held Sept. 19 at the Redding Rancheria. Inurnment will be in Fall River. McDonald’s Chapel in Redding handled cremation arrangements.
