Sonora ran away with the wrestling win over Argonaut Wednesday night, 48-9.
“We looked really solid and wrestled aggressively,” said coach John Abernathy. “Many of our wrestlers wrestle matches a weight above their weight class and continue to be successful.”
Gabe Atwood had his best match of the year, said Abernathy.
Atwood (182) defeated a strong opponent in Brian Whaling.
Another standout on the night was Brett Stewart.
“(He) showed great technique quickly pinning his opponent as did Ethan Champe,” said Abernathy.
Here’s how Sonora’s wrestlers fared individually:
Christ Ramos (113 defeated Michael Alcuriza by pin; Brett Stewart (145) defeated Jeremy Allgeyer by pin; Ethan Champe (152) beat Jose Cruz-Trujano by pin; Devn Brisco (160) defeated Adam Avitia by decision, 10-4; Riley Mathis (170) beat Charles Blevins by pin; Gabe Atwood defeated Brian Whaling by decision, 7-1; Elijah MacDonald (195) defeated Ethan Stone by pin; and Mark Camara (285) beat Sebastian Elms by decision, 6-0.
“Mark Camara and Devin Brisco ground out tough wins,” said Abernathy.
Travis Pingree (106), Keanu Perez (120), Trevor Davis (126), Colton Davis (132), Coleton Sanguinetti (138) each won by fault.
Next up for the Wildcats is senior night when they’ll host Calaveras Wednesday, Jan. 31. Junior varsity matches begin at 6 p.m. and varsity starts at 7:30 p.m.
