Everyone's Irish for Irish Day

The organizers of the Murphys Irish Day celebration say so many people turn out for the event they’ve given up estimating the size of the crowd.

“What we do know is the people who came filled Main Street, spent a lot of money, had a good time, and behaved themselves very well,” said Michelle Plotnik, the event’s long-time coordinator.

Saturday was the 25th year for the event, which is held to raise money for the sponsor, the Murphys Business Association.

The day started with a pancake breakfast, then the parade with 52 entries, including horses, mountain dogs, and a motorized shopping cart. Community groups marched as well, and there was lots of music.

More than 100 vendors were on hand, selling food and beverages as well as various handcrafted items, including artwork and photography.

Columbia resident Bobbye Loudal won the grand prize, a trip to Ireland. Loudal and a companion will stay for the first night in Dublin or Shannon, then five nights in bed and breakfast inns in whatever Irish locale they choose.
