Dr. Michael Portillo has joined Adventist Health Sonora as a doctor of family medicine.
He earned a medical degree at the Dr. José Matías Delgado University of El Salvador, completed a year as a primary care physician at the Paisnal Health Clinic, also in El Salvador, and a clinical preceptorship at the Sky Lakes Medical Center in Klamath Falls, Oregon.
He most recently completed a residency at Dignity Health, Mercy Medical Center in Merced.
Originally from Burlingame, Portillo moved to El Salvador, his father’s home country, when he was 14. His grandparents owned the dry goods store in Columbia, where his mother spent summers away from San Francisco working in the store. Portillo’s in-laws have lived in the area for nearly two decades. His mother in-law, Marguerite Bulkin, is Tuolumne County’s Superintendent of Schools.
Portillo is an avid runner who also enjoys hiking, skiing, soccer and biking. He and his wife, Carmel, who is joining Belleview School in Sonora as a teacher, also enjoy exploring the outdoors with their two children, Sidney and Leroy.
