Jamestown’s new First Friday event aims to combine art, food, wine and live music on the first Friday of each month through October.
The monthly events are a collaboration between the Tuolumne County Arts Alliance and the Jamestown Promotion Club along with Jamestown’s merchants. Many of the shops on Main Street will be open until 8 p.m. Friday.
“It is intended to be an economic driver for Jamestown through the arts,” said Connie O’Connor, executive director of the arts alliance.
Local artists will be showcased in various shops and wine tasting rooms along Jamestown’s Main Street during Friday’s event.
The entrance to the Jamestown Hotel will feature the photography of Gary Johnson, who is a member of the Aloft Art Gallery in downtown Sonora. His “Spektrel Series” images, which are printed on glossy metal, will be displayed and for sale.
Inner Sanctum Cellars’ tasting room will feature oil paintings by artist Patrick Karnahan.
Continue down the street to Gianelli Vineyard’s tasting room to enjoy the shaded lawn and art by Joy Willow.
Pierce’s Antiques and Collectibles will feature oil landscapes by Barbara Conley, a longtime member of the Mother Lode Art Association.
The Jimtown Sock Company will showcase Jamestown artist Leslie Hurst, while Ash B’s will feature “beaded creations” by Stacey Elliott. Emporium Antiques and Collectibles, which will have its espresso bar open, offers artwork by Lorna Hunt.
Organizers of the monthly First Friday are viewing the event as a way for area residents to explore Jamestown at the end of the work week. They also anticipate it will be an added bonus to those staying in one of Jamestown’s historic hotels.
Along with shops displaying artwork, there will be live music by Ivory Flat at Jamestown’s Rocca Park. The band will make its debut from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday inside the park’s restored historic gazebo. This is a free event sponsored by the Tuolumne County Arts Alliance.
Similar to downtown Sonora’s successful Second Saturday Art Night, which combines art and music, various venues are expected to host live music during the August event.
“This is an event we expect to grow,” O’Connor said.
