Special Olympians compete at Summer Games

The Union Democrat Sports Department

Tuolumne County Special Olympics sent eight athletes to the Summer Games at UC Davis in June.

Sinclair Darr, Ashley Dorsett, Nash McVey and Staci Sherbert led Tuolumne County during the three-day event on June 27-29 by bringing home a team-high three medals each.

"It was a fantastic showing for Tuolumne County," said area director Dave DeCheney. "They did great. They had a strong showing. They really did. It was a good event for them."

Darr, 17, captured gold in all three of her swimming events in her division: 50-meter freestyle, 100-meter freestyle and the 50 backstroke.

Dorsett, 25, also medaled in gold three times in her division. She took gold in the 25 free, 50 free and 50 back.

McVey was a force to be reckoned with in the track and field events with gold in the 100-meter run and the turbo javelin. The 8-year-old first-time Special Olympian also claimed silver in the 200.

In the softball throw, Sherbert, 27, won gold and followed that with a silver and bronze in the running long jump and 100-meter run, respectively.

Joe Delgado medaled twice swimming in his division. The 31-year-old took gold in the 50 and 100 breast and placed seventh in the 50 free.

The Bocce team of Ashley Grimes, 27, Adam Wozniak, 26, and Cassandra Richardson, 36, won silver and missed out on gold by one point.

The team won its first four matcheson Saturdayto go undefeated heading into championshipSunday. The squad won its opening gameSunday, but fell in the title match.

"They performed really well," DeCheney said. "This is our second year of sending bocce ball to Summer Games. It's kind of a new sport for us. They're getting better and better every year. Their expectations are getting higher and higher."
