Summerville drops first MLL game

Elisha Flores went 2 for 3 hitting and drove in three runs, but it wasn't enough, and the Summerville Bears baseball team fell 9-8 against Argonauton Fridayin Tuolumne.

Summerville scored four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-3 lead; however, Argonaut tied the game at four in the third and grabbed the advantage by tacking on three runs in the fourth.

The Bears knotted the score at seven in the fifth.

In the sixth, Summerville stranded two runners on base, and Argonaut was able to pull away with a two-run rally in the final inning.

The Bears added a run to cut the deficit to one, but could not find that game-tying run.

"We just have to have that killer instinct to be able to finish it off, especially when we have guys in scoring position," said Bears head coach Larry Gold. "We have to be able to come through with some clutch hitting. We didn't do it. We just got to be able to finish games off."

Argonaut out-hit Summerville 10-4, but committed six errors. In comparison, the Bears recorded three errors.

"We just got to cut down on those errors," Gold said. "If we didn't have the errors it might be a different outcome, but hey, they're giving their all out there everyday and that's all you can ask for."

Summerville's Johnathan Olsen batted a perfect 2 for 2 and scored two runs. Alex Barnes had the Bears only other hit. Starting pitcher Bryce Farrell tossed four innings and gave up five earned runs while striking out one. Reliever Danny Robles threw three innings and retired four.

"I was pleased that we were able to score runs," Gold said. "We only came up with four hits. Our hitting went to sleep, but we did get guys on base."

The Bears (3-7, 2-1 Mother Lode League) return to action today against Argonaut for a makeup game that was rained out last week. First pitch is at4 Jackson.

"Hopefully, we can get back on the right hitting track and get timely hits," Gold said.
