S’ville grapplers submit Argonaut

The Summerville Bears wrestling team opened its Mother Lode League season in style.

Summerville beat Argonaut 58-15on Wednesdayin Jackson.

"We wanted to start league on the right note," said Bears head coach Jordan DePaoli. "There was no better way to start it than tonight. It's a great way to start league play with a dominating victory like this."

At 126, Jack Wivell started the dual meet winning by forfeit.

The Bears' top grappler Andrew Brennan, a 132-pounder, won by a 10-2 major decision, defeating Davis Henderson.

Summerville's Zach Marquez was credited with another win by forfeit at 145.

Jed Glazier, at 152, recorded the Bears first pin, winning at1:09against Phillip Martine.

And from there, the pins piled up.

Humphrey Quirie pinned Austin Curran in the first round at 160 in1:15. Austin McCready, a 170 pounder, beat C.J. Wynne in just 45 seconds. Tyler Stoy, at 182, won by pin in the second round in2:20over Ryan Sober, and 195-pound Elisha Flores beat Shane Kursar by pin in the second round at2:18.

"The team was really energetic," DePaoli said. "It seemed like one pin led to another. The entire team really stood out."

There was a double forfeit at 220 and heavyweights.

Colby Dibble and Devon Conklin recorded the Bears other two pins at 106 and 120, respectively.

"I feel like the whole team stepped up to the challenge," DePaoli said. "They all looked very good all night long. The kids were real positive. There was a smile on everyone's face. They were all happy with their performances."

The Bears will head to the two-day Lloyd Engel Tournamenton FridayandSaturdayin Escalon for their next matches.

"A real good one for all the kids to get some experience," DePaoli said. "They're guaranteed to get three to four matches."

In junior varsity action, Sedrick Rodriguez won by pin at 138 in second round at2:21.

Tony Kellogg won by pin in1:09at 145. In an exhibition match, Marquez pinned his opponent 30 seconds.
