The Summerville Bears girls' basketball team dropped its Mother Lode League opener, losing 49-24 against Argonauton Fridayin Tuolumne.

Argonaut, the defending MLL champions, got out to an early lead, scoring in double digits in the first three quarters and coasted the rest of the way.

"They're a good team," said Summerville head coach Dave Woods. "They're senior loaded, pretty much the same group that went 15-0 last year. We competed OK. We just didn't shoot the ball well enough. Part of it was their defense."

Sophomore guard Sarah Boyer led the Bears with a team-high eight points and drained Summerville's only 3-pointer.

Argonaut held Summerville to six points or fewer in the first three quarters.

"I would like for us to be further along than we are," Woods said. "We didn't play badly. We still have too many turnovers and still not getting enough shots off. It took us a while to get comfortable. Second half, we made a few adjustments and started to play better."

In the final 8 minutes, the Bears got familiar with the Mustangs (11-2, 1-0 MLL) trap defense and netted a team-best 10 points.

Summerville (4-9, 0-1 MLL) will try to get back on track when it plays against Bret Harteon Tuesday at 7:30 Angels Camp.
