S’ville girls split 2 at El Dorado, go for conso title today

The Summerville Bear girls hoopsters earned a spot in the consolation championship on Saturday with a 37-18 pasting of Amador at the 37th annual Jan Vitell Tournament at El Dorado High School.

The Bears play Bella Vista today at 5 p.m. in the consolation bracket to close the three-day event.

Summerville gave Amador a glimpse of what to expect when Mother Lode League play begins early next year.

The Bears jumped out to an 11-4 lead after one period and were ahead 20-6 at halftime. Summerville led 25-8 heading into the final eight minutes.

"We pressured them and got up by 20 points," said Bears head coach Dave Woods. "We took off the pressure and everybody got to play starting in the first half. They cut the lead to 11 but we turned up the pressure again and pulled away."

Raquel Relva scored a Bears best 10 points and also grabbed five rebounds.

Also for Summerville (4-7), Sarah Boyer scored eight spoints and Mariah Graham added four.

Graham led the Bears in rebounds with seven. Haven Trambley and Bobbi Devoto each hauled in five boards.

The Bears suffered an opening-round 41-35 loss to Lodi on Friday.

"I know they're a Division I team, but we should have beaten them," Woods said. "We had the lead, we just couldn't hold on."

Summerville led 14-12 after the first period and 23-19 at halftime. Lodi rallied for a 29-28 lead entering the fourth frame.

Relva and Jillana Rodighiero each scored a team-high 11 points and Boyer netted nine points.

Rodighiero grabbed a game-high rebounds, Relva had eight and Bailey Richter hauled in seven boards.

The Bears next will open the Mother Lode League slate against Bret Harte on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Angels Camp.
