S’ville girls edged by Los Banos at Hilmar

The Summerville Bears girls suffered a narrow 55-51 defeat to Los Banos on Thursday in the first round of the Hilmar Basketball Tournament.

Jillana Rodighiero scored a game-high 26 points for the Bears, including four from beyond the arc.

The game was close throughout with both teams enjoying the lead.

It was tied at 13 after one period. Los Banos led 24-23 at halftime but the Bears rallied to take a 36-33 lead heading into the final eight minutes.

"We played a lot better than we had been playing," said Bears head coach Dave Woods. "We led off and on throughout the game. We started making some shots tonight and I hope we continue that."

For the Bears (2-5), who have lost four straight, Raquel Relva scored eight points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, Sarah Boyer scored five points, including a 3 and Caitie Egger scored four points and grabbed six boards and Haven Trombley pulled down eight rebounds.

The Bears play Mariposa today in the second round at 4 p.m.

Redskins fall to Hawks at home

Liberty Ranch used a 24-6 second-quarter run Thursday to pull away and defeat the Calaveras Redskin hoopsters 69-50 at Mike Flock Gym.

"We made way too many turnovers and had bad offensive possesions," said Redskins head coach Kraig Clifton. "I am happy with our second half effort, but again, we had too big of a whole to dig out of."

For Calaveras (5-3), Kyle Gouveia scored 16 points, grabbed nine rebounds and made two blocks, Mike Seawell scored 11 points, dished three assists and made three steals and Jayson Verona added six points and three steals.

The Redskins next will host the Sonora Wildcats on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
