Friend is MVP, 5 Wildcats All-VOL

The Union Democrat Sports Department

With the way Sonora volleyball blitzed through the Valley Oak League this season, there's no surprise the Wildcats also dominated the postseason awards.

Sonora had six players, all juniors, honored by the VOL for its title-winning season.

Wildcat Shannon Friend was named the league's Most Valuable Player. The outside hitter was a dominant kill machine and simply couldn't be stopped, often hitting over and through defenders.

Wildcat teammates Bella Bergamaschi, Savannah Lawrence and Bailey Henington were named to the VOL First Team.

Bergamaschi, the setter supreme, conducted the Wildcat offense. She would often start the action with a tough serve, then make a dig, then set up a hitter, like Lawrence.

Lawrence, one of the more athletic Wildcats, played great defense in the back row and was a dangerous hitter from anywhere on the court.

Henington, a libero, was a digmaster and spent most of her time sprawling on the hardwood to keep balls alive.

Leah Dambacher and Angela Gardella were awarded Second Team recognition.

Sonora finished 14-0 in the VOL, and followed that with the school's first Sac-Joaquin Section championship. The Cats finished the season as the CIF State NorCal runner-up.
