The Sonora Wildcats opened their 2013-14 wrestling season by outlasting their Tuolumne County rival, the Summerville Bears, on the maton Wednesday.

With nine total wins, including four by forfeit, Sonora won 50-22 over host Summerville.

"I was pretty pleased with it," said Wildcat head coach Jon Abernathy. "I'm really happy with my numbers. It's really created a lot of competition in the room. It's always nice to come off of a win. It's good to have a full team. We're looking forward to having a pretty good season."

Sonora, who has nearly 40 wrestlers overall in its program, was credited with four wins by forfeit because Summerville did not have a competitor in the 126, 138, 220, and 285-pound weight classes.

Summerville opened the match with a victory by Colby Dibble, who pinned Wildcat Cameren Ambrose in1:32.

The Bears kept that momentum going in the 120-pound weight class as Devin Conklin pinned Sonora's Dakota Smiley in1:50.

Then Sonora senior Kyle Mantzouranis at 132 stepped onto the mat. Thirty-eight seconds later, he walked away in style by pinning Jack Wivell.

At 145, Wildcat Colton Masters and Bear Zack Marquez went at it. Masters won by a 10-0 majority decision.

Not to be outdone, Summerville sophomore Justin McCready notched a win by pin against Collin Crabtree in 48 ticks at 152.

Sonora's 160-pounder Lucas Pallante won by a 15-3 majority decision over Jed Glazier.

Summerville junior Humphrey Quirie recorded the Bears last victory with an 11-3 majority decision at 170 against Torrin Phillips.

"Humphrey Quirie is really good," Abernathy said. "He's a really tough wrestler."

Two other Wildcat pins came from Paul Ravelli, 182, and Jack Trent, 195, in1:09 and 3:22, respectively over Austin McCready and Tyler Stoy.

Both teams did not have a wrestler at 113 pounds.

"The match also showed me we have a lot to work on at practice to become the type of team we want to be," Abernathy said."
