With freshman Megan Popovich shooting an even par to earn medalist honors, the Sonora Wildcats defeated Weston Ranch 265-329Thursdayat Van Buskirk Golf Course in Stockton.
Megan Popovich carded a 36 and senior Emma Holloway shot a 49. Tallon Popovich added a 53, Jacqui Jordet a 56, Olivia Partone a 61 and Sidney Joplin finished with a 69 to win by 64 strokes.
The Wildcats end their Valley Oak League season with an 11-3 record behind first-place East Union, who went undefeated in league play at 14-0.
"The girls had a fantastic season, and I'm very proud of all our seniors who played this year," Wildcat head coach Reed Munn said. "As far as the future, Megan Popovich, a freshman getting a medalist just shows the future we have to come in girls golf."
Sonora won three matches this week and will play in the VOL Championshipon Monday.
Soccer Cats fall late vs. East Union
The Sonora Wildcats soccer team hanged tough for nearly the entire match against East Union in Valley Oak League play, but fell short, losing 1-0 on the road.
East Union scored with four minutes left in regulation to salvage a late victory.
"It was a tight game," Wildcat head coach Lloyd Longeway said. "Everybody on the team played hard. There wasn't a lack of effort. We had some chances and didn't score them."
The Wildcats will host KimballMondaynight at Dunlavy Field.
Bullfrogs volleyers sweep Argonaut
The Bret Harte Bullfrogs demolished Argonaut 3-1 (25-10, 23-25, 25-18, 25-14) with Shelby Warner leading the wayThursdayin Angels Camp.
Warner finished with 14/17 serving and five aces. In attack, Warner connected on 30/34 and smashed 14 kills.
"Shelby Warner had a great night tonight," said Bullfrogs head coach Richard Juarez. "She played extremely well. She was the leader in serves and attacks."
Bullfrog setter Maddie Fichtner went 104/107 with 35 assists, and Brianna Simpson and Arica Fox finished with 15 and 14 digs, respectively.
With the win, the Bullfrogs improve their Mother Lode League record to 4-4, and will face Lindenon Tuesdayon the road.
The junior varsity and freshmen squads both won to add to the Argonaut sweep.
Redskins beat Bears in MLL volleyball
The Summerville Bears volleyball team lost to the Calaveras Redskins 3-1 (26-28, 25-18, 19-25, 20-25)Thursdayin San Andreas.
Bears Nikki Christie, Caitie Egger and Shiloh Plaster all finished with three kills.
Senior co-captain Breann Robinson went 97/99 setting with 31 assists. Camilla Richardson added two assists on 8/8.
Kayla Brick lead the team with 16 serves received.
JV Wildcat volleyers beat Oakdale
The Sonora Wildcats junior varsity volleyball team rallied from a one-set deficit to defeat Valley Oak League rival Oakdale 2-1 (17-25, 25-13, 15-12)Wednesdayat Bud Castle Gym.
Elyse Queenville served 9/10 with four aces and three kills. Michele Parsons served 3/3 with an ace and had three kills.
Adriana Albanez had an assist with three kills. Maddie Stevens recorded a block and kill.
Kailie Fredrickson served 9/9 and added 12 assists with MaKenna Poole pitching in 10 assists and a block and kill.
Also for the Wildcats, Gabbie Stewart smashed a kill. Grace Hernandez had an assist, a block and finished with three kills.
Riley Carpenter had four kills, Riley Henington hammered two kills with a team-high 25 passes and Kristin Chormicle chipped in two assists and a kill.
"Another great matchup of volleyball," Wildcat JV coach Andrea Fray said. "The girls are starting to read the other teams and strategize a little more. It is so fun. Each week, we improve on little things and when each player does their job it all comes together. I am happy for all of them, they should be proud of all the hard work."
The freshmen Wildcats fell to Oakdale 0-2 (24-26, 25-27).
Kayla Estrada lead the team with 10/12 serving and powered four aces. Delaney Ditler went 8/8 and an ace.
Allison Morfoot pounded a Wildcat-best five kills.
With the loss, Sonora now has a 5-2 VOL record.
"We started off slow tonight and that put us at a big disadvantage," Wildcat freshman coach Jennifer Hendy said. "We rallied back from behind both games, but Oakdale was able to hold us off tonight."
3 Redskins runners earn medals
Three varsity Calaveras Redskins cross country runners earned medals last Saturday at the 5K Wildfire Invitational in Foresthill.
Olivia Borchin, Devin Scheidt and Mykayla Leiser medaled, crossing the finish line in eighth (22:01),10th (17:52) and 15th place (24:20), respectively.
For the varsity boys, Jesais Hall was the second Redskins runner at 21st (18:26), Jared Teicheira 40th (19:59), John Andresen 42nd (20:13) and Frankie West 59th (22:38).
Savannah Rose was the third Redskin for the varsity girls at 19th (25:17) and Bryn Merrill 20th (25:34). In Division IV, Mary Stewart was 22nd (28:45) and Madison Colborn 24th (33:31) to finish third as a team.
Redskin freshman Jynee Baroda placed 16th (16:58) in the two-mile race.
