The Defending Mother Lode League volleyball champion Summerville Bears defeated the Bret Harte Bullfrogs 3-1 (26-24, 20-25, 25-20, 25-23) on Tuesday at Angels Camp in each team's league volleyball opener.

The Bears used a balanced hitting attack with Nikki Christie smacking nine kills and Katie Freedman and Caitie Egger each recording seven kills.

Breann Robinson, Kayla Brick and Freedman all served for three aces and Brick and Shiloh Plaster led the Bears in serve receive.

For the Bullfrogs, Shelby Warner served 26-28 with four aces, Kelsey Switzer hit 16-20 with eight kills and also had six blocks, Maddie Fichtner set 93-95 with 16 assists, Arica Fox was perfect on digs in 11 attempts and Krista Maisch hit 13-13 with five kills and also made five blocks.

"We served pretty well hitting our spots and putting the ball where it needed to go," said Bullfrog head coach Richard Juarez. "Krista Maisch has been a real bright spot for us and is just straight doing her job consistently. She's picking up teammates and making a great contribution to this team."

Bret Harte next will play at Amador and Summerville will host Argonaut. Both play on Thursday at 6 p.m.
