Tioga ties in soccer opener

The Tioga Timberwolves boys soccer team opened its 2013 season with a 3-3 draw against the Big Valley Christian Lions of Modesto.

Johny Amoruso converted a penalty kick for the Timberwolves in the last minute of regulation with a shot into the left corner of the net to tie the match.

Tioga's Luis Alecio scored the first goal of the game in the 37th minute when he centered a ball from the end line and it deflected into the goal off a Lion defender. Alecio's first-half goal would send the Timberwolves into halftime with the 1-0 lead.

The Lions came roaring back to open the second half with two goals in the first three minutes.

Amoruso tied the game at 2-2 in the 56th minute when he connected with a ball on a well-placed corner sent in by Matt Spring.

But the Lions answered again in the 74th minute.

Timberwolf goalkeeper Brett Woods recorded 11 saves, including stopping a barrage of point-blank consecutive shots.

Tioga next will host Millennium on Friday at 4 p.m.
