Sonora volleyers defeat visiting Calaveras

The Sonora girls varsity volleyball team has played three teams from the Mother Lode League this season, and after a 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-14) win over Calaveras at Bud Castle Gym, Wildcat head coach Kim Evans considers the Redskins the team to beat.

"They have all the pieces in place to make a run for the title," Evans said.

Junior outside hitter Shannon Friend led the Wildcats with 10 kills in the victory and Savannah Lawrence had eight. Elsie Evans and Bella Bergamaschi contributed to the attack with four each.

Bailey Henington recorded a team-high 16 digs and Leah Dambacher added 12 with Shannon posting eight.

Bergamashi, a junior, had a productive night with 22 assists. Henington had three.

Friend's strong arms led to a solo block and two block assists. Lawerence also had a solo block and a block assist. Evans blocked one too.

Bergamashi blasted three aces and Friend and Dambacher finished with two, respectively.

"Our setter Bella did a great a great job of distributing the ball and was very aggressive and caught their defense off guard several times," Evans said. "Our outside hitter Shannon did a great job offensively and defensively of getting several kills off of smart hits that we have been working on in practice, and played good defensive in both blocking and digging."
