The Summerville High Softball Boosters will present the 2nd "Character Based Athletics" seminar on Saturday, Sept. 7 at the school's Connections Visual Academy Theater.
Rob Miller, of Liberal, MO., is a nationally-renown motivational speaker and will conduct three one-hour presentations: For parents of student athletes, 2-3 p.m.; student-athletes 3:30-4:30 p.m. and coaches 5-6 p.m.
The event is geared towards high school athletes, parents and coaches.
Sonora 1982 graduate Ray Emerald, who is an assistant for the Summerville Bears varsity softball team and the president of the youth girls Sierra Gold Fastpitch, invited Miller to speak for the second straight year.
"We had a lot of success last year, a lot of people showed up and it seemed like a good idea to bring him back," Emerald said.
Miller specializes in helping kids reach their maximum potential through sports. He was a team captain on his college basketball team (Spring Arbor, MI.) and then later was its coach. He has coached high school girls' and boys' basketball and served as commissioner of the Sun Conference (NAIA) and later spent eight years with the NAIA as Director for its Champions of Character program. Miller now runs his own motivational program.
The fee for the program is $15 per person (family of three is $40, $5 each additional family member).
During the first session, only parents are allowed. The second session focuses on the athletes although coaches can attend as obersevers only. The final session is for coaches only.
The programs will cover subjects like: the role of parents in athletics, creating good athletic memories, leadership, character, honesty and integrity, teamwork, responsibility, accountability and selfessness.
