Summerville Bear cheerleaders returned recently with top awards after stunting, cheering and showing the most spirit at the United Spirit Association Summer Camp held at Stanislaus St. in Turlock.
The Bears varsity and junior varsity cheer squads participated in the three-day event which took place July 12-14.
The Bears competed with five other schools and earned the coveted Unity Award which goes to only one team and is given to the team that illustrates unity, good sportsmanship, good character and, of course, spirit.
The Bears also won the Spirit Stick Award for being one of the most spirited squads in camp.
"We were so shocked when we won the Unity award," said co-head coach Angela Dunlap. "It was such a big deal for us. This is the first time Summerville has gone to camp and performed stunts."
The Bears were evaluated on a home cheer routine and later in a game-action situation and received Superior marks, the highest rating possible.
For their performance, the team was awarded a plaque, a Gatorade drink cooler and Gatorade products.
Bear senior Jordan Newington was awarded the "America Needs Cheerleaders" pin for being exceptional at camp by either giving, teaching or lending a hand. Newington in turn had to present a pin to a deserving fellow cheerleader on another team.
Bear freshman Alyssa Dunlap was one of those cheerleaders recognized by an award winner from another team and received a pin.
