Eighteen Tuolumne County Aquatic Masters swimmers broke into the 2013 Pacific Masters Short Course Top 10 rankings.

The team had 80 individual awards plus nine relays on the Top 10 chart.

The rankings are based on meets held in 25-yard pools. The TCAM swimmers competed at meets in San Francisco and Moraga last winter and spring.

Dick Todd, 71, led the team with six No. 1 rankings in the 70-74 age division (100 and 400 individual medley; 50 and 500 freestyle; and 50 and 20 breastroke). He placed fourth in the 50 butterfly.

Single first place rankings were attained by Toni Wivell, 76, Susan White, 70, Mary Welsh, 59, and Dylan Avery, 19.

Wivell placed in seven events in the 75-79 division including the top spot in the 50 fly. She was second in 100 free, third in 500 free, fourth in 50 and 100 backstroke, and sixth in both the 50 and 100 free.

Versatility in strokes proved to be the winning combination for Mary Welsh and White, who both were first in the 400 IM.

Swimming in the 70-74 division, White ranked second in the 1000 free, third in 100 fly, fourth in 200 IM and fifth in 100 back.

In the 55-59 group, Welsh placed second in the 100 fly, fifth in 200 and 1650 free and eighth in 100 IM.

Distance swimmer Avery topped the chart in the 200 back in the 18-24 division. He placed second in 200 breast and fifth in 500 free.

Ranking in seven events along with Todd and Wivell were Connie Birdsall, 67, Ruth Garretson, 67, and Bob Garretson.

Birdsall's top 10s were fourth in 50 breast and 200 IM, fifth in 100 free, sixth in 100 IM, and seventh in the 200 and 500 free plus the 50 back.

The TCAM team's oldest competitor, Bob Garretson, was third in 50 free, fourth in 100 and 200 free, fifth in 200 back and 100 IM, and sixth in 50 and 100 back.

Karl Kleman, 72, made a strong showing in the 70-74 division but just missed the top spot in two events with second in the 50 and 100 breast. He was fourth in the 50 free and fifth in 100 free.

Bill Anning, 71, ranked in the top 10 of six events. Focusing his efforts in the free and back events, Anning finished third in 200 back, fourth in 500 free and 100 back, fifth in 1000 free, seventh in 50 back and ninth in 1000 free.

Sheryl Parola, 64, and her lanemate, Robin Carter, 62, had strong showings in the 60-64 division. Parola made the top 10 in six events while Carter ranked in three.

Parola's top ranking was in the 400 IM where she placed third. She was fourth in the 500 free, 200 back and the 50 and 100 fly. She was seventh in the 100 IM.

Carter ranked sixth in the 500 free, seventh in 200 breast and ninth in 100 IM.

For the men in the 65-69, breaststroker Kirby Smith, 66, was third in 200 breast, fourth in 100 breast, seventh in 50 breast and 10th in 100 IM.

In the 50 and older divisions, Matt Gass, 55, captured sixth in the 200 fly, ninth in 200 back and 10th in 200 IM. While Stuart Welsh, 56 was seventh in 400 IM and ninth in 1650 free.

TCAM's 65-and-older 200 free relay team topped the chart in first place. The winning team, composed of Birdsall, Ruth Garretson, Kleman, and Todd, also swam fast times in the 50 free.

The 55-and-older women's 200 medley relay and 65-and-older men's 400 free relay teams finished third in the rankings. On the 200 medley, Ruth Garretson led with the back, followed by Carter swimming breast, Welsh fly and anchored with Parola swimming free.

Each member of the 400 relay swam 100 free with Anning leading off, followed by Bob Garretson, Smith and Todd.

The team's remaining seven relay times finished in the top fifth through seventh spots on the chart.
