Vets fishing event on Saturday at Melones

Around 40 veterans are expectedSaturdayfor the Purple Heart Anglers fishing event at New Melones Reservoir.

The vets will be treated to a day on the lake with local volunteers hosting the servicemen and women on their boats.

"There's been a great outpour of support from the community," said Melanie Lewis, of Glory Hole Sports, and event helper. "We've got more boats than we do veterans."

The boats will launch at7 a.m.from the Glory Hole boat ramp and are scheduled to return around12:30 p.m.After fishing, the vets will be the featured guests at a barbecue at the Black Bart picnic area where all are invited.

"Anyone can show up, bring a dish for the potluck, and say 'Hi' or 'Thank you.' " said Lewis.

Purple Heart Anglers is a non-profit organization and its sole purpose is "to serve the needs of the community and by serving those needs produce a program that aids in the healing of the wounded warriors of the United States military and their families."
