Once dormant women’s 500 club seeking new members

A group of avid bowlers is spearheading an effort to bring back a longtime local women's club that has been inactive since the Sonora Family Bowl on Stewart Street shut down in 2010.

The Women's Mother Lode 500 Bowling Club is holding a membership drive in hopes of bringing in some fresh faces interested in competing at both state and national tournaments.

"Since we moved from Sonora Bowl, it has been difficult to reach our members because we're all scattered across different leagues," said the club's president Shirley Parades, who lives near Murphys. "We have about 20 members right now, but we're just in the start-up stages of the reorganization."

Membership costs $5 per year and is open to any female adult member of the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) who has bowled a 500 series or more in a USBC-sanctioned league or tournament since Sept. 1, 1978.

Some USBC-sanctioned tournaments require that competitors belong to a club such as the Women's Mother Lode 500 Bowling Club.

Parades said the group will compete at various tournaments hosted by other clubs throughout the state along with national competitions in places like Las Vegas and Reno.

"There are all types of tournaments that we compete at, but it's a really relaxed group," Parades said. "Basically, it's just another way to bowl in a tournament format aside from leagues."

In June, the club plans to compete at its first tournament in Carson City that is sponsored by a 500 bowling club based in Jackson. There will also be another tournament trip planned for Reno in fall.

"It's just fun to go and interact with all the bowlers that are in the different organizations," Parades added.
