Foothill Star hoopsters shine

The Union Democrat Sports Department

The Foothill Stars 10th-grade JV boys' basketball team competed last weekend at Las Positas College in Livermore and defeated a Silicon Valley team in the first round and a Vallejo team in the second.

The 10th-grade hoopsters were previously victorious at the Modest Slam n' Jam Tournament onApril 20, defeating teams from Turlock and Oakland.

The 8th-grade team won both of its games at Las Positas as well, but suffered close losses in two of its three games at the Modesto tournament in April.

Both teams travel this weekend to play in the biggest Amatuer Athletic Union-sanctioned basketball tournament in the country - the annual "Jam On It" Memorial Day Tournament in Reno.

In the past three years competing at the Reno tournament, the 10th-graders have taken second place in the gold bracket and won the silver bracket in 2012.

The Stars will be looking for wins this weekend as they ramp up the level of tournaments they play this year in order to again qualify for the AAU National Championships.

Both Foothill Star teams are made up of players from Sonora, Twain Harte, Murphys, Angels Camp, San Andreas and Valley Springs. For more information, or to make a donation in support of the team, contact Lloyd Longeway at 840-1108 or Tiffany Flies at 770-1461.
