Sonora wins big in home finale

The Sonora Wildcats roared past Weston Ranch 11-1 in five innings on Monday, on Senior Night, in their home finale.

Wildcat senior hurler Ryan Stevenson tossed 4 2/3 innings and allowed one hit, one walk, one unearned run while striking out 10 in earning his seventh victory of the season.

"Ryan had a nice game for his final one at home," said Wildcat head coach Scott Johnson. "He could have thrown the complete game, but I took my seniors out in the middle of the inning to honor them."

Stevenson, who may throw today in Sonora's season finale at Weston Ranch, has struck out 120 batters in 70 1/3 innings. Breaking down the numbers a little more, he has faced a total of 288 hitters and struck out 42 percent.

Sonora scored a run in the first, six in the second and four in the third to put the game away early.

The Cats belted 10 hits, led by Stevenson, Tyler Helm and Ryan Dies with two each. Dies smacked a double and scored twice, Stevenson scored three times and drove in a run and Helm scored twice.

Also for Sonora (3-10 Valley Oak League), Justin Payne was 1 for 2 with an RBI, Charley Dunn was 1 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, Nick Harris was 1 for 3 with a run scored and Carter Denton was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

"We had good approaches at the plate," Johnson said. "It was nice to finally get some hits. That was the team I envisioned we'd be more like, real aggressive at the plate. It was a good night for seniors (Stevenson, Payne, Ryan Dills, Gino Balestrieri, Anthony Aune) - they had to sit through a 20-minute rain delay - but it was nice to send them off with a win."
