Davis helps lead Bret Harte over Summerville

Bret Harte pitcher Sydney Davis hurled a complete game and helped herself at the plate by going 2 for 3 on Friday against Summerville in a 5-3 Mother Lode League girls' softball victory at home.

"Bekka Gross gave a strong performance defensively as the catcher for Bret Harte while hitting a stand up triple," said Bullfrogs assistant coach Ralph Emerson.

Also for Bret Harte, Elle Burton and CJ Cobb each went 2 for 3 at the plate. Burton also had three RBIs.

Summerville pitcher Taylor Ebner walked away with the tough luck loss fanning three batters and allowing only three earned runs in her complete game effort.

Bret Harte out hit Summerville 9-4.

"Their pitcher hung in there and made pitches when she needed to," said Summerville head coach Ben Watson. "She walked nine but only gave up three hits, and because of those walks we left of runners on base. She was able to shut us down when she had to and we made quite a few base running errors."

Watson said Summerville will need to cut down on its errors - it had six Friday compared to Bret Harte's four - as the Bears head into crucial games with the 2013 regular season winding down.

The Bears (5-5 MLL) are in fourth place with Calaveras (9-2) in first, Linden (7-3) in second and Argonaut (7-4) in third with five games left to be played.

Only the top three teams earn a berth in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV Softball Championships.

Summerville faces Argonaut at home Wednesday before traveling Friday to Calaveras for a game against the No. 1 Redskins.

"A win on Friday would have put us in good shape and given us a good shot - but it's not over," Watson said. "Our backs are up against the wall and we'll see how we respond Wednesday."
