Barajas, Cats top Buffaloes on road

The Union Democrat Sports Department /

Kade Barajas shot a match-low 4-over-par 41 to lead the Sonora Wildcat golfers over Manteca 223-227 Tuesday at Manteca Municipal.

Barajas was co-medalist for the first time this season.

"He's been really close before but this is his first time as the medalist," said Wildcat head coach Steve Lee. "He did really well today. And Manteca (5-8 Valley Oak League) has improved a lot."

Also for Sonora (11-2 VOL), Billy Kiriluk shot a 42, Zach Atwood a 43, Cayden McLaughlin a 45 and Ethan Farwell shot a 52.

With the win, the Wildcats are at least tied for second with Oakdale. But if the Mustangs won their match against East Union Tuesday, there will be a 3-way tie for first.

Either way, a showdown is set for Thursday when the Wildcats host Oakdale at 3:30 p.m.

"We've got a big match on Thursday agaisnt Oakdale," Lee said. "But win or lose, the league title is gonna come down to who does what next week at the VOL Championships at Poppy Ridge. Winning would be nice."
