McLaughlin, Wildcats top Sierra, eye league title

Cayden McLaughlin shot a 2-over-par 39 to lead the Sonora Wildcats to a Valley Oak League golf victory over the Sierra Timberwolves on Thursday at Manteca Municipal.

The Wildcats were locked in a close match and looked to have edged the Timberwolves 219-220, but in the end Sierra was disqualified for reporting wrong scores.

"At that course, that score is very good for us," said Wildcat head coach Steve Lee. "It was a close match. They have improved tremendously - they'll be tough at the VOL (Valley Oak League) championship at the end of the year at Poppy Ridge."

The Wildcats (10-2 VOL) were tied for second with Oakdale entering Thursday, both one game behind East Union (10-1).

"The league is very tight right now," said Lee. "It looks like it's gonna come down to the VOL tourney."

Also for the Wildcats, Billy Kiriluk carded a 42, Brandon Phelan a 43, Zach Atwood a 47 and Ethan Farwell a 48.

"Cayden was the medalist today and that's the first time for him this season," Lee said. "He didn't play in the first half because of an injury. Now he's playing extremely well. His tempo is great. He keeps the ball in the fairway and he's peaking when we need him the most."

The Wildcats will next face Manteca on Tuesday, again at Manteca Municipal and finish the season with a home clash against rival Oakdale next Thursday at Mountain Springs.

The VOL tournament is on May 1.
