Frog golfers jump past Bears

Bret Harte Bullfrog golfers continued their Mother Lode League dominance Thursday besting short-handed rival Summerville 217-272 at Greenhorn Creek in Angels Camp.

Bret Harte's Alex Milward shot a 37 for the third time in four matches so far this season. He had a birdie on No. 7 and shot for par on most others, said Bullfrogs head coach Rich Cathcart.

"As far as Bret Harte teams go, we've had some really good players over the years and Alex fits right in with those at the top," Cathcart said.

Milward's 37 on Thursday was also good for medalist honors.

Bret Harte freshman Colin Casey shot a 41, while Scott Hatfield finished with a 43.

"He just keeps getting better," Cathcart said of Hatfield, a sophomore.

Cathcart said windy conditions led to some higher scores for a few Bullfrog golfers. He was also impressed with the Bears, who were without their No. 1 and 2 golfers (Kyle McLaurin and Jesse Roberson) and had four on the team who had never played the tough Angels Camp course.

"We had four guys who were less experienced than the rest, so I wasn't displeased with the result at all," said Bears head coach Darcy Wingo.

For Summerville, Charlie McClung led with a 47, Max Wulf shot a 52, Jordan Barcelos 55 and Austin Frederick 56.

"Frederick and Barcelos didn't play last year," Wingo said. "I thought they handled themselves very well getting on a tough course against a tough opponent."

Both teams won't play again until Thursday, when they enter the midseason Mother Lode League Tournament hosted at Castle Oaks in Ione.
