Wildcat golfers suffer first VOL loss against rival Oakdale

The Oakdale Mustangs delivered Sonora its first Valley Oak League golf loss Thursday at Oakdale Golf and Country Club.

The Wildcats were coming off a match Tuesday in which they shot a season-low 197 against Sierra.

"We figured, 'OK, let's go get 'em,' but then came out flat," said Sonora head coach Steve Lee. "It's a hard score (240) but not one indicative of what we can do."

Sonora's Billy Kiriluk shot a 42, while Kade Barajas had 47, Sam Mays 48, Ethan Farwell 51 and Brandon Phelan 52. Oakdale's Ian Stogdell shot the match-low, a 39, earning medalist honors.

Lee said the Mustangs played their best match of the season while Sonora had its worst in years.

"They came together while the wheels were coming off our cart," Lee said of the Mustangs. "The good news is we play them again this season at our place (Mountain Springs) and that's usually a huge advantage."

Despite the loss, Sonora (5-1 VOL) remains on top of the standings with Oakdale (4-2) in close second.

The Wildcats are on spring break next week but will play in the 20-team Atwater Invitational on Monday at Stevenson Ranch. Sonora last won the event in 2010.

"It's usually good competition and a lot of fun, so hopefully we can get things back on track again," Lee said of the yearly invitational.

Sonora's next VOL matchup is against Weston Ranch, April 2, at Mountain Springs.
