Wildcat soccer stymies Weston Ranch in VOL opener

The Sonora Wildcat girls' soccer team opened Valley Oak League Tuesday with a 1-0 victory over host Weston Ranch.

The Wildcats survived a Cougar first-half surge that produced 12 shots on goal keeper Hannah Taylor, who let nothing get by.

"We've got a lot of injuries right now," said Wildcat head coach Denyse McLaughlin. "We had a lot of new girls playing together and it took us some time to get moving and connecting.

"In the second half, they all figured it out. We made some changes and we pretty much dominated play and had a lot more opportunities. The communication on the field improved greatly."

Sonra's lone goal came off a right-footed blast from senior Rachel Rosasco.

Rosasco received a through ball in the middle from Riley McLaughlin. Rosasco touched it to herself and then slammed a shot into the back of the net from around 16 yards, just outside the penalty box.

Sonora's Becky Bayer took over keeper duties in the second half and finished the shutout.

"Celia Cotrone had a really positive game in the midfield," said McLaughlin. "Leah Divine did a good job of communicating and working with new players and Carly Lucas played a very gutsy midfield on offense and defense. She set up a lot of opportunities."

The Wildcats have the rest of the week off and will host Manteca on March 19 at 6:30 p.m.
