Sonora defeats Escalon, falls to Ceres

The Sonora Wildcats varsity baseball team continued its season-opening undefeated streak Friday beating Escalon 4-3 before falling to Ceres the next day for their first loss.

Wildcat hurler Evan Estes was solid in his first start of the season, going six innings with nine strikeouts. Justin Payne came in during the seventh inning and kept Sonora's lead intact for the victory.

"Evan pitched a good game," said Sonora head coach Scott Johnson on Monday. "He's a junior pitcher and did really well. Justin Payne nearly got a save in the seventh.

"Overall, we had some solid defense and pitching and were able to come away with a win."

Sonora suffered its first loss of the 2013 season at home against Ceres on Saturday.

The Ceres Bulldogs (6-1) won 18-1 in seven innings.

Ceres scored 10 runs through the first five innings to take a 10-1 lead. Neither team had a run in the sixth, but the Bulldogs got eight during the seventh and final inning.

"Basically, that was our third game of the week and we pitched some kids who didn't have a lot of varsity experience," said Johnson. "It was kind of rough housing for them, but it's a good experience."

Johnson said the Wildcats (3-1) will put the tough loss behind them and prepare for the Ripon Indians today.

The game starts at 5:30 p.m. at Sonora High.

"We're not as bad as an 18-1 loss," said Johnson.
