Diamond Bears conquer Coyotes

Summerville hurler Nathan Bruce picked up his first win of the 2013 baseball season after going three innings without giving up a run in Tuesday's home-opener against Denair.

The Bears beat the Coyotes 12-8 with Summerville junior Jonathan Olsen getting his second save of the season when Bruce was pulled after giving up two runs to start the fourth inning.

Summerville answered with six runs in the fourth inning to take a dominating 9-2 lead. Denair had four runs in the fifth and two in the sixth and final inning to come up short.

The Bears have won the first two of four games during a busy week in which they are also shorthanded. Starting pitchers Logen Foster, Joey Brocchini and Bryce Farrell, along with first baseman Connor Morningstar, are all on the Bears' basketball team seeking a Section title in the postseason.

The Bears had seven hits and committed five errors total on Tuesday, while Denair had six hits and three errors.

"We gotta cut down on our defensive errors because we're making our pitchers work a little too much with a busy week," said Bears head coach Larry Gold. "But it's great to get another win and get off to a 2-0 start."

The Bears face Central Catholic, a Modesto private school, in Tuolumne on Thursday. Gold said the Raiders should provide a challenge.

"They're always good," he said. "They're well-coached and gonna be out there to play, so they're gonna really show us what a playoff contending team looks like."

That game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. The Bears wrap up their week against Kimball, also in Tuolumne at 3:30 p.m., Friday.
