Sonora beaten by Kimball

The Sonora Wildcats basketball team was defeated 71-66 by Kimball Wednesday in Tracy.

The Wildcats gave up a season-high in points to the Division II Jaguars.

Kimball grabbed a 15-10 lead in the first quarter, led 30-24 at halftime and 45-41 heading into the final period.

"When things go bad, they go bad," said Wildcat head coach Rick Francis. "The kids played real hard. But we have shots that go in-and-out. We go up for a layup and the ball slips out of our hands and out of bounds. It's frustrating.

"Danny Matranga had his best game of the season and (Ben) Bates played sick all night."

Bates scored a Wildcat-high 19 points while Matranga added a season-high 15 points.

Also for Sonora (7-18, 3-9 Valley Oak League), Josh Thacker scored nine points, Jeff Storey had six on a pair of 3-pointers and Matt Howard had five.

Sonora is still not out of playoff contention but must win their final two games to be in the discussion.

Sonora will host rival Oakdale on Friday and will look for a bit of revenge after losing in the first meeting.

"That's our big goal right now is to beat Oakdale," said Francis. "Their fans were pretty rough on us down there. And there's still a little bit of light flickering, not much, but there's still a chance to get into the playoffs."
