Fired-up Frogs top Buffaloes

Bret Harte Bullfrog head coach Jeff Eltringham said his team was "fired up" to hit the court Friday for its homecoming hoops clash against Amador.

"We had a lot of emotions and came out pretty good in the first half," Eltringham said.

The Frogs jumped out to a 19-13 lead to end the first quarter and were up 35-24 at the break. They would end up winning 67-59, but not before overcoming some tense moments.

Amador then turned the tables in the third quarter outscoring Bret Harte 28-14 and taking a 52-49 lead. Eltringham said the Buffaloes actually cut the deficit within the first couple minutes of the second half scoring on the their first five straight possessions.

However, the Bullfrogs outscored the Buffaloes 18-7 in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

"Our kids are learning now that you never let up and have to play hard all the way through the game," said Eltringham. "I was happy with how they were able to bounce back. They didn't get discouraged, kept battling and pulled it out in the end."

Bret Harte junior Will Whited and senior Tyler Evans led the Bullfrogs with 22 points each. Whited also grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double.

"Whited and Evans are always huge for us," Eltringham said. "Whited's rebounds were all defensive rebounds. Having guards do that really helps because our tallest guy is only 6-2."

The Frogs as a team also nailed 21 of 26 free throws.

Eltringham noted the defensive efforts of Bret Harte's Rodney Riner and Brock Pierce, who together held Amador's leading scorer Josh Coy to only 13 points.

Bret Harte (13-6, 5-2 Mother Lode League) will next host Argonaut (4-14, 2-4 MLL) Tuesday and cross-county rival Calaveras (6-11, 2-4 MLL) Friday.
