Redskins earn win in Linden

The Calaveras Redskins boys' basketball team picked up their second Mother Lode League victory Friday when they defeated the Linden Lions 65-49.

Calaveras' Mike Seawell and Wyatt Madrid combined for 46 of the Redskins' total points. Seawell had 26 and Madrid 20.

The two also accounted for Calaveras' six 3-pointers on the night, with Seawell draining five and Madrid adding another.

"Our scoring stayed consistent and our defense stepped it up in the second half," said Redskins head coach Kraig Clifton.

Linden's leading scorer Matt Zaklan opened the game up early for the Lions hitting three 3-pointers to build a 9-0 lead.

The Redskins battled back and the game stayed tight throughout the first half with Calaveras leading 29-28 at the break. But the decision to have Redskin senior Kellen Hodgson guard Zaklan in the final two quarters proved to be the difference maker.

Zaklan, who ended the game with 23 points, didn't have a single field goal in the third quarter and only one bucket in the fourth.

"He did an outstanding job for us defensively," Clifton said of Hodgson.

Clifton hopes the win will provide some momentum for the Redskins (6-11, 2-4 MLL) as they prepare to host top-ranked Summerville (15-3, 7-0 MLL) Tuesday and longtime rival Bret Harte (13-6, 5-2 MLL) Friday.

The Redskins last faced Summerville on Jan. 8 in Tuolumne, where they were defeated 56-45.

"We're up against a monster in Summerville," said Clifton. "We were a little passive last time we played them, but now there's no surprises so we'll just go out there and compete hard."
