Sonora upset try falls short at Sierra

By Alex MacLean / The Union Democrat

For three quarters it looked like the Sonora Wildcats might pull off an upset of the defending Valley Oak League-champion Sierra Timberwolves.

But in the fourth quarter, Sierra pulled away for a 63-45 victory and remain perfect in VOL play (3-0).

"We played three really good quarters," said Wildcat head coach Rick Francis. "In that fourth quarter we just fell apart."

Sierra led 15-11 after the first quarter but Sonora rallied and trailed 26-25 at halftime. Heading into the final frame, the Cats trailed 47-41.

"We played really hard and we mixed up our defenses like we did against Lathrop (64-49 win Friday)," said Francis. "We defended two of their top leading scorers real well but one guy just tore us up. And in the fourth quarter, we just made too many mistakes and you can't do that against a good basketball team."

Sierra's star guard Guillermo Nunez scored a game-high 34 points, including six 3-pointers.

Sonora was led by Ben Bates who scored a team-high 17 points, including a 3-pointer.

Also for Sonora (5-11, 1-2 VOL), Will Collamer scored eight points, Nick Mays netted eight points, Derek Smith scored six on a pair of treys and Matt Howard and Jeff Storey each scored three points, both hit 3-pointers.
