The Summerville Bears girls' basketball team picked up their first victory of the season on Friday at the High Sierra Winter Classic in Reno.

The Bears ultimately went 1-3 in the tournament held Thursday through Saturday.

Summerville opened the tournament against Carson City, a more than 2,600-student high school, and fell 67-36.

For the Bears, Ashley Gamber had 12 points while Raquel Relva added seven.

In the second game of the tournament, Summerville defeated Fernley 45-42 for their first win.

"That's the most quality team we've beat in the three years I've been head coach," said Summerville's Dave Woods.

The Bears were down 24-17 at the half but battled back throughout the third and fourth quarters to take a late lead with two minutes left in the game.

With 4.5 seconds left and Summerville up a point, Fernley fouled Gamber who coolly nailed both free throws to put her team up three points.

"We did a really good job converting off the fast break," said Woods. "Krysta (Calkins) picked up five of her baskets on the fast break."

Woods noted the Bears got to watch highlights from their win on the local Carson evening and morning newscasts,.

Woods said Summerville's final game against Lowry, where the Bears fell 47-27, was disappointing because Lowry previously lost to Fernley.

"Our main goals from the tournament were to foster team unity and get some more game experience, so hopefully we accomplished that," said Woods.

The Bears next game is at the Hilmar Tournament, which will be held Thursday-Saturday.
