Smith wins Hernia Hill Run

Maurer, Summersett, French, Turner also earn category titles

Sonora High School senior Samantha Smith was the top finisher for women on Sunday at the annual Hernia Hill Run held at Twisted Oak Winery in Murphys.

Smith won the main event, the half marathon, with a time of 1 hour, 38 minutes, 56 seconds. She was three and a half minutes faster than her nearest competitor.

Also for area women, Sonora resident Michelle Narita, 18, finished in

sixth place (2:11.54), Twain Harte's Emily Leaird, 29, finished seventh

(2:24.10) and Linda Callison, 45, of Vallecito, finished ninth

(2:24.46).

Markham Miller, of Daly City, 48, was the overall winner with a time of 1:27.20.

For area men, Sonora's Tim Wyman, 52, finished in sixth (1:34.27), Rob

Houghton, 55, of Murphys, was eighth (1:38.15), Mike Morris, 30, of

Jamestown, was ninth (1:38.30) and Nick Waelty, 30, of Sonora, was 10th

(1:38.39).

The Hernia Hill also has a 10k and 5k run.

Bret Harte senior Kevin Maurer was the top male in the 10k, finishing the course in 41:24.

Maurer bested the competition by six and a half minutes.

Behind Maurer were Tony Littman, 58, of Arnold, (48:06), John Muller,

56, of Murphys (51:24), Scott Henning, 50, of Sonora (51:39), and

Russell Peffer, 52, of Hathaway Pines (51:46).

For the women, Josette Summersett, 30, of Hathaway Pines, ran away from

the competition, winning with a time of 48:15 - finishing third place

overall.

Sierra Warnick, 22, of Sonora, finished in second with a time of 57:10.

Sonora High sophomore Shaan French Jr. was the overall winner in the 5k. French torched the course in a time of 19:43.

He finished two and a half minutes ahead of his nearest competition.

Also for the men, Mitchell Deacon, 24, of Columbia, was second (21:45) and Gerry Holmes, 69, of Murphys, was third (22:31).

Summerville High School senior Kristen Turner took home the womens' title with a time of 21:19.

Turner was three and a half minutes ahead of the second-place finisher, Haley Heryford, 19, of Murphys (24:55).

Tami Henning, 50, of Sonora, was third (27:12) and Theresa Ballaine, 49, of Murphys, was sixth (31:47).
