Local roundup: Lady Reds fall; JV Bears baseball stays hot

The host Calaveras Redskins' softball team was defeated by Linden 2-1 on Friday.

The Redskins fell to 8-4 in Mother Lode League action and are now in third place behind Linden (9-3). Both teams have clinched a postseason spot. The two are still competing for second place.

For Calaveras, Marissa Hukkanen, Courtney Tarbat, Nina Toia and Jennifer Scantlen each had hits.

Megan Walters pitched all seven innings for Calaveras and struck out eight while yielding just one walk and three hits.

Summerville baseball falls to Argonaut

The Summerville Bears baseball team suffered a 22-7 road loss to Argonaut on Friday.

For Summerville, Bryce Farrell, Joey Brocchini and Dalton Day each were 1 for 2.

The Bears (3-10 Mother Lode League) were eliminated from postseason

competition. Argonaut (6-7) is locked in a two-team dogfight for the

MLL's final playoff spot.

"It's been an up-and-down season," said Bears head coach Larry

Gold. "One day, we throw a 2-hitter or 4-hitter and then sometimes the

wheels come off."

Smith, Klatt highlight Sonora tennis season

Sonora tennis doubles team Josh Smith-Andrew Klatt competed in

the CIF D-II Sectionals Meet on Thursday. They were defeated by the No.

1 seeded team from Granite Bay.

Both Smith and Klatt earned First-Team All Valley Oak League honors.

JV Bears red hot, win fifth straight game

The red-hot Summerville Bears JV baseball team won its fifth consecutive contest on Friday at Argonaut. The Bears won 4-1.

Summerville is now 9-4 in Mother Lode League action.

"Things are going very well for us right now," said Bears coach John Baldwin.


Summerville, Darren Warnock was 2 for 3 and teammate Nathan Bruce

tossed a complete game, striking out nine while yielding only two walks

and one unearned run.

On Wednesday, Summerville defeated visiting Calaveras 8-7 in eight innings.


trailed 7-1 after four innings. The Bears rallied for two in the fourth

inning and three in the fifth to make it 7-6.

Then Bears

starting pitcher Johnathan Olsen settled down and, with some

outstanding defense behind him, allowed no runs and just four hits the

rest of the way.

Bruce drove in Preston Leslie to tie the

game with two outs in the seventh. After Olsen retired the Redskins on

six pitches in the eighth, he was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom

half. Olsen stole second and Austin McCready put down a perfect bunt

and Olsen scored the game-winner on a wild throw to first.

Leslie, McCready and Kai Bannister each scored twice and Bruce and Jeff Grabow had 2 RBIs.

Olsen was the winning pitcher, striking out seven in eight full innings of work.

"This was by far the most exciting game of the year," said Baldwin.

"The kids are working hard and things are coming together. I couldn't

be happier with the way we're playing."

Cat JV loses to rival

The Sonora JV baseball team lost a heartbreaker to host Oakdale last Wednesday.

With the score tied 3-3 in the bottom of the 7th, Oakdale scored on a 2- out throwing error.

The runner who scored the winning run reached base on a fielding error.

Carter Denton, Conner Todd and Clayton Davis pitched for Sonora and teammate Tyler Garcia had two hits.
