The Calaveras Redskins girls' varsity basketball team won the three-day Galt Tournament championship with wins over Galt, McQueen and Bear Creek.

Calaveras defeated Galt on Thursday, 56-19, McQueen 46-36 on Friday and Bear Creek 57-31 for the title on Saturday.

Against Galt, 2011 All-Area Most Valuable Player Nikki Gleason scored

nine points, dished four assists and had five steals. Also for

Calaveras, Savannah Duncan scored 17 points while draining five treys.

R.B. Ruhl had three assists, Paulina Mejia had six boards and Megan

Coleman seven.

Against McQueen, Gleason scored 16 points, grabbed 12 rebounds,

dished four assists and had four steals, Duncan scored 13 points and

had three steals and three assists, and Brianna McGinness scored eight

points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Maddie Cox grabbed 10 boards and had

three assists.

Against Bear Creek, Duncan scored 14 points, dished three assists

and had five steals. Cox scored 12 points and grabbed nine boards and

McGinness scored 10 points and grabbed seven boards. Gleason had three

assists and Coleman grabbed seven boards.

"Overall, we played really well on defense in this tournament,"

said Redskins head coach Mike Lewis. "We're playing intense and that's

a reflection on how hard our kids are working in practice. I'm excited

because we've got some good talent on our team.

"Nikki Gleason, of course, in this tournament, played her usual

all-around good game. Passing, defense, Nikki just goes all-out all the

time just like she practices.

"Savannah Duncan is taking very smart shots. I don't think she

knows yet just how talented she is. She won't take a 3-point shot until

she's set. She works to get herself open for those shots. She doesn't

rush shots like I've seen a lot of other opposing girls do."

As for Cox, Lewis said, "She is a rebounding machine. She's also working real hard on post moves.

"Also, Brianna McGinness just works, works, works and works. She is

a real good defender and has also become a good post player."
