Wildcats strong at own hoops tourney

The Sonora Wildcat varsity took third place in its own highly-competitive three-day Sonora Girls Basketball Tournament held at Bud Castle Gym.

Sonora guards Maddie Pallante and Elise Amend each earned First-Team All-Tournament honors.

Del Oro took the title in this talent-laden event for the seventh

consecutive year. Del Oro's 5-foot-11 junior forward Brianna Ruiz took

Most Valuable Player honors.

On Thursday night, Sonora fought back from a 10-1 deficit to defeat

Argonaut, 37-34. In all, 14 players contributed to that Sonora victory.

On Friday, Bear River took a 15-8 first-quarter lead over Sonora

and then eventually won 52-23. Sonora had no problem executing its

offense and getting good shots, however, the Cats were cold from the

field.

"Friday's score against Bear River could have been a lot closer,"

explained Sonora first-year head coach Amy Santos. "But we shot poor

and they're very good - and that's a bad combination.

"But, overall, this tournament went very well for us."

In the third-place contest on Saturday, Sonora had an outstanding

fourth quarter and was able to break open a 23-23 tie by outscoring a

feisty Bret Harte squad 20-9.

"Our press got stronger in that fourth quarter," said Santos.

"Plus, we started hitting our free throws. Up to that point in this

tournament, we'd been struggling with our free throws."

Against Bret Harte, Jade Mena scored 13 points, Cassidy Knowles eight and Bailey Henington seven.
