The Union Democrat Sports Department /

The Sonora Wildcat boys' water polo team got offensive on Monday.

Hosting Los Banos at Sonora Sports and Fitness Center, the Wildcats earned a 26-12 victory.

"We jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first quarter behind three goals

from Bennett (Personius) and did a good job of keeping the offensive

pressure up all game with lots of players looking to shoot," said

Wildcat head coach Matt Personius. "We had numerous counter-attack

goals as well as scoring out of our set offense. I have to hand it to

the center for Los Banos, though, he scored eight out of their 12 goals

and forced us to work very hard at defending the 2-meter position.

For Sonora (17-4, 8-1 Valley Foothill League), Personius finished

with six goals, Brendan Hurley four, Hunter Vroman, Keith Godula and

Justin Payne three, Billy Parks and Curtis Bassi two and Kyler Johnson,

Dylan Miguel and Spencer Lyons each had one goal.

Sonora next will host Ceres today at SSFC at 6:30 p.m.

The Sonora varisty girls lost 8-6 to Los Banos.

For Sonora, Carina Wedel and Ruby Personius scored two goals apiece and Kacee Johnson and Marta Houghton each scored one.

"Unfortunately we allowed Los Banos to go up 2-1 in the first and

extend their lead to 5-3 at the half and 8-4 at the end of three," said

Coach Personius. "We stepped up defensively in the fourth and held them

scoreless, but fell short scoring only two.

"They scored multiple times on weak side lobs which ultimately made

the difference for them. We had a little trouble adjusting to the

off-speed shots and our defense gave up uncontested shot opportunities."

Over the weekend, the girls went 2-3 in the Western States tournament. Their overall record is 12-13, 6-3 VFL.

Frosh/soph-The Wildcat boys beat Los Banos, 16-3.

could not play our usual game," said Wildcat head coach JulieAnn

Personius. "But on Monday against Los Banos, we were back on track.
